Prognostic value of metabolic tumor volume as measured by fluorine‐18‐fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography in nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Abstract: The MTV and radiotherapy could be prognostic values associated with OS. Particularly, MTV2.5 and MTV3.0 might be valuable metabolic parameters for predicting long-term survival in patients with NPC. Furthermore, MTV3.0 may be more useful because it can be applied irrespective of pathologic subtype.

“…[16,[21][22][23][24] While there was 1 study that measured SUVmax and TLG [9] , 2 others reported SUVmax and MTV. [11,13] There were 5 studies that measured only SUVmax, [4,8,10,14,25] and 1 that reported only MTV. [15] There were differences in definitions and terminology used among studies.…”

“…[15] There were differences in definitions and terminology used among studies. While 8 studies defined the measurements on tumors alone as VOI, [4,8,11,[13][14][15]23,25] 5 studies included both tumor and lymph node (LN) measurements to define VOI. [9,10,16,21,22] One study used LN measurements alone to report VOI.…”

“…Although the value of 18 F-FDG PET comparing with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in diagnosing head and neck cancer is still an open question89101112, its sensitivity and specificity in detecting distant metastasis is higher1314151617. As its capability in revealing biological feature of tumor, researchers have become interested in the predictive value of FDG PET, including for prognosis and for tumor regression of NPC181920.…”
