Prognostic Value of Mannose-Binding Lectin: 90-Day Outcome in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke

Abstract: Complement activation and inflammation have been suggested in the pathogenesis of stroke; mannose-binding lectin (MBL) was found to have roles during the process. We therefore evaluated the short-term prognostic value of serum MBL in Chinese patients with an acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Consecutive AIS patients admitted to the emergency department were identified. Clinical information was collected. Serum concentration of MBL and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) was measured at the time of admission. Short-term functi… Show more

“…Stroke caused mainly by atherosclerosis is the second most common cause of death worldwide and a major cause of acquired disability in adults [1]. Ischemic stroke accounts for approximately 80-85 % of all cases and is characterized by the disruption of cerebral blood flow and lack of oxygen to the affected area [2].…”

“…Although previous articles (16)(17)(18) demonstrated the significance of MBL in ischemic stroke, the role of MBL has not been examined in aSAH. This study analyzed the medical data of 132 aSAH patients and determined the admission serum MBL concentrations.…”

“…Moreover, the expression of cortical MBL is upregulated after clinical and experimental traumatic brain injury (12). Furthermore, high circulating MBL levels are associated with the risk, disease severity, and poor clinical outcomes of ischemic stroke (16)(17)(18). At present, the data on the change of circulating MBL levels after aSAH are lacking.…”

“…Functional outcome was obtained on month 6 according to the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) [25], with the evaluator blinded to CXCL12 levels. The primary end point of this study was favorable functional outcome of stroke patients after 6 months from baseline, defined as a mRS score of 0 to 2 points.…”
