Prognostic Value of Ki67 Expression for Patients with Surgically Resected Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Perspectives from a High Incidence Area

Abstract: High Ki76 expression has prognostic value for poor survival for RHCC patients, and detection of Ki67 with IHC may be promising for estimating survival for RHCC patients in areas with high-incidence for this disease in China.

“…In HCC patients, high levels of Ki-67 can be indicative of tumor aggressiveness, such as advanced tumor stages, portal vein invasion and intra-hepatic metastasis (10), which is associated with high early recurrence rate and poor prognosis (11-13). Thus, Ki-67 has been proposed as an independent prognostic factor for surgically resected HCC in recent studies (5,14). Typically, Ki-67 labeling index (Ki-67 LI) is assessed pathologically after surgery (6), therefore it is inapplicable to patients with surgical contraindications.…”

“…Previous studies have confirmed that MVI is a critical determinant of the early recurrence of HCC (22,23). Moreover, Bai et al demonstrated that Ki67 expression was positively correlated with the increased risk of death and recurrence (24). Additionally, various studies have indicated that systemic inflammation plays a central role in tumor promotion and progression, thereby promoting HCC recurrence postoperatively (25,26).…”

“…Nuclear non-histone protein Ki-67 is widely used as a proliferation associated marker in cancer cells to guide adjuvant therapy decisions 23 , 24 . Ki-67 is an independent prognosis factor for HCC and increased expression of Ki-67 correlates with higher-grade malignancy and worse prognosis 25 , 26 . We analyzed existing microarray datasets to find whether there is any correlation between DR5 and Ki-67 in HCC using an online resource (Oncomine) 27 .…”
