Prognostic Value of Hypothalamic Copeptin in Acute Ischemic Stroke

Abstract: Background: Some studies showed that copeptin, a hypothalamic hormone derived from the precursor of vasopressin, may be useful in the prediction of outcome of ischemic cerebral stroke. The aim of this work was to search if there is any correlation between serum copeptin, in the first day of ischemic stroke, and its clinical severity, radiological findings and also its predictive value of functional outcome in these patients.

“…The CT brain was evaluated for the presence of any signs of early infarction [11], hyperdense middle cerebral artery (HMCA) sign [12], and estimating the size of infarction according to the rules [13]. The size was classified as small, medium, and large [14]. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain was done in suspected brain stem lesions, early ischemic stroke, and when follow-up CT brain is free.…”

“…Furthermore, copeptin levels predicted unfavorable functional prognosis and mortality in stroke patients. An improved prognosis accuracy was observed after adding copeptin measurements to the NIHSS or ABCD2 score, compared to using these scores alone [138,139].…”
