Prognostic value of cytokines (TNF-α, IL-10, Leptin) and C-reactive protein serum levels in adult patients with nosocomial sepsis

Abstract: Objectives: The purpose of this trial was to investigate in patients with sepsis, the correlation between prognosis of disease and factors, which influence prognosis like gender, focus of infection, bacterial growth in blood culture, growing pathogens in addition to serum levels of cytokines (TNF-α, IL-10, leptin) and C-reactive protein. Material and methods:Forty-six adult patients with sepsis and 55 healthy adults as control group were enrolled in this study. Serum cytokine (TNF-α, IL-10 and leptin) levels w… Show more

“…Interleukin-10 (IL-10), released by Th2 subgroup lymphocytes mediates the immune response by neutralising the proinflammatory action of IL-1 and TNF, having a subsequent protective effect on lipopolysaccharide-induced pathogeny. Elevated plasma levels indicate the presence of severe inflammation and correlation with severity and mortality in sepsis has been reported [ 41 ]. Recently, an increase in sepsis susceptibility and morbidity has been suggested by the presence of a promoter SNP for the -1082 polymorphism [ 34 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 ], although two meta-analyses confirmed the association only in an Asian population [ 45 , 46 ].…”

“…The evaluation of sepsis severity and outcome is complicated by the lack of gold standard for the diagnosis of sepsis and the variability in its presentation (2) . Many scores and biomarkers had been studied in this perspective, with Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score being traditionally used for this clinical situation (3) .…”

“…The examination of the balance between pro-and antiinflammatory cytokines serves as a predictive marker in clinical practice (45). The mortality of the patients with sepsis is related to elevated TNF-α and IL-10 concentrations (46,47). The IL-10: TNF-α ratio is low in surviving patients (47), so it has been assumed that TNF-α/IL-10 disbalance represents one of the triggering factors for the development of SIRS and polyorgan failure in the initial stage after burn injury (48).…”
