Prognostic significance of the preoperative serum levels of soluble form of endoglin in gastric cancer patients

Abstract: Abstract:Background: Gastric cancer is the second commonest cause of cancer-associated deaths in the world. Its molecular markers can be useful not only for the diagnostic pursuit but also for prognostic purposes. Endoglin was proposed as a marker of neovascularization in solid malignancies. A circulating form of endoglin is referred to as soluble endoglin (sol-end).The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical importance of serum level of soluble form of sol-end in gastric cancer patients. “…25,27 In contrast, Gomceli et al failed to find an additive predictive value to endoglin levels in patients with gastric or colorectal carcinoma. 34,35 Conversely, in accordance with our findings, Daly et al found endoglin levels to increase in the transition from node-positive disease to disseminated disease in patients with lung adenocarcinoma. 24 Similarly, several independent research groups reported an association of plasma endoglin with distant metastasis in patients with both colorectal and breast cancers.…”

“…32,46 sENG has been shown to represent a biomarker for many solid cancers. [47][48][49] Our results show for the first time shedding of sENG by lymphoblastic pre-B cells, which correlated with MMP-14 expression, indicating that this process is not restricted to angiogenic cells. Higher levels of sENG were detected in the plasma of B-ALL patients when compared with AML counterparts, indicating differences in endoglin shedding between ALL and AML.…”

“…This aggressive cancer has very poor prognostic factors (45). Gastric Cancer society reported that every year more than 800 000 people are affected by this type of cancer (38,43). Gastric cancer occurrence is by 70% in developing countries (44).…”
