Prognostic Significance of T-Cell or Cytotoxic Molecules Phenotype in Classical Hodgkin’s Lymphoma: A Clinicopathologic Study

Abstract: The presence of T-cell and/or cytotoxic antigens in H-RS cells may represent a poor prognostic factor in CHL, even if their expression is not regarded as lineage specific. Examination of T-cell and/or cytotoxic molecules phenotype in CHL patients is recommended as a routine pathologic practice.

“…However, BNLI grade was not prognostic for the OS outcome (data not shown), which is consistent with results from another Asian study [31]. Previous studies on BNLI grading have yielded contradictory results [32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39].…”

“…This series included 324 patients with CHL and 41 with cytotoxic molecule-positive PTCL-N who had been examined in our previous study. 19,21 Approval for the study was provided by the institutional review board of Nagoya University.…”

“…We also recently highlighted that the expression of T-cell antigen and cytotoxic molecules, either singly or in combination, is an independent poor prognostic factor in CHL. 21 To our knowledge, however, no comprehensive evaluation of the clinical characteristics of cytotoxic molecule-positive CHL has yet been reported.…”

“…3,4,5 Taking into the consideration that some classical Hodgkin lymphomas may even express cytotoxic molecules, differential diagnosis between classical Hodgkin lymphoma and anaplastic large cell lymphoma may be challenging. 10 Fascin appears to have a limited usefulness in the differential diagnosis between these two entities as its negativity may help the exclusion of classical Hodgkin lymphoma. 2,5,9 Fascin staining was observed in 34 of 55 (61.8%) DLBCLs in our study and 20 (36.3%) of them were diffuse strong.…”
