Prognostic significance of preoperative serum CEA in primary mucinous ovarian carcinoma: a retrospective cohort study

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of preoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in primary mucinous ovarian carcinoma (MOC).Patients and methodsWe reviewed 57 patients with primary MOC, in whom preoperative serum CEA had been measured. All patients were treated at Peking Union Medical College Hospital between June 1996 and September 2016.ResultsPreoperative serum CEA was elevated (>5.0 ng/mL) in 10 patients (17.5%), with a median serum CEA of 9.6 ng/mL (5.4–111… Show more

“…Because of our contrasting result, we confirmed the mucinous character of the UT-OV-1 by immunohistochemistry. The tumor cells were positive for CDX2, CEA, CK7 and p53, which are features of ovarian mucinous adenocarcinoma, intestinal type (42,43). This discrepancy might be due to the availability of better diagnostic tools which has led to improved histopathological diagnosis of different types of mucinous ovarian cancer.…”

“…30 Some tumorassociated antigens have been measured in serum from patients with malignancy and were found to be related to the clinical course of disease. 31 Other malignancies closely related to gynecologic cancers have examined serum markers, [32][33][34][35] including SCC-Ag, AFP, CA153, CEA, CA125 and CA199 have been of great value for evaluation of pretreatment, treatment effect and for follow-up and establishment of patient prognoses. In our study, we collected clinicopathological data of the early stage ADC patients and analyzed the association of pre-operative serum tumor markers with prognostic value, in order to look for predictive risk factors.…”

“…Relevant studies have confirmed [ 15 ] that radical radiotherapy has the same effect as surgery. As a radiotherapy technique applied in the clinic for a long time, conformal radiotherapy can reduce the irradiation dose to the surrounding tissue by adjusting the morphology of the irradiated X-ray [ 16 , 18 , 19 ].…”
