Prognostic significance of miR-23b in combination with P-gp, MRP and LRP/MVP expression in non-small cell lung cancer

Abstract: Recently, miR-23b has emerged as a promising new cancer biomarker but its role in lung cancer has not been established yet. Patients still do not respond well to available treatments, probably due to expression of multidrug resistance (MDR) proteins, such as P-gp, MRP and LRP/MVP. The aim of this study was to determine the role of miR-23b in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and its relationship to the patient outcome together with MDR transporter proteins. We immunohistochemically evaluated expression of P-g… Show more

“…As there are no literature data describing the contribution of these miRNAs as a cluster to cytostatic resistance, at this stage, one can only assume that they may affect the expression of genes associated with PAC resistance. However, the upregulation of miR-23b correlated with better survival of lung cancer patients [71] and, on the other hand, with DOX-resistance in thyroid cancer cells [72]. In another study, downregulation of miR-23b and miR-27b was observed in multidrug resistance protein 1 (MDR) Ehrlich ascites tumor cells [73].…”

“…MiR-23b-3p is reported to be down-regulated [47] or up-regulated [48, 49] in NSCLC samples. MiR-23b-3p has been known to perform various roles in tumorigenesis and progression [4954].…”

“…There are several cell signaling molecules and pathways involved in drug resistance, including the ABC transporter subfamily B member 1 (ABCB1/MDR1/P-gp) [ 53 , 54 ], ABC transporter subfamily C member 1 (ABCC1/MRP-1) [ 54 ], and lung resistance-related protein (LRP) [ 55 ]. Consistant with these reports, our results further demonstrated that miR-146a could downregulate drug-resistance-associated proteins (P-gp, MRP1 and LRP) and upregulate the expression of cleaved caspase-3 in vitro and vivo.…”
