Prognostic score for life expectancy evaluation of lung cancer patients after bone metastasis

Abstract: Background This study identifies the overall survival status of lung cancer patients with bone metastasis and metastasis patterns. Poor prognostic factors were identified to develop a scoring system for estimating survival period after bone metastasis. Methods A retrospective cohort analysis was performed at Chiang Mai University for the period January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2013. Time-to-event analysis was performed to estimate survival rate. The prima… Show more

“…T stage roughly classifies tumor size or depth of invasion, but it cannot reflect the specific character of NSCLC patients with BM and accurately predict the prognosis, because the tumor size of the same period varies greatly [ 23 25 ]. Age, tumor size, race, sex, histological types, grade, T stage, N stage, surgery, chemotherapy, liver metastases, and radiotherapy were related to prognosis, which was similar to the previous research [ 26 30 ]. The presence of liver metastases significantly decreased survival in lung cancer patients with BM [ 17 ].…”

“…We compared with other diagnostic or prognostic scoring models regarding it diagnostic value. There are many clinical scoring models (35,36). Compared with previous scoring models, such as scoring system to distinguish uncomplicated from complicated acute appendicitis, our models have similar diagnostic value (37).…”

“…Small cell lung cancer can produce osteoblastic or mixed lesions, affecting mostly the spine, ribs, and pelvis, in patients treated with chemotherapy that allows a longer survival time, as reported in the clinical literature [42]. In the Casal Bertone skeleton the lung metastases are unlikely to have spread in such a massive and disseminated manner in almost all of the bones, since lung cancer has a very short-term prognosis in the absence of therapy [41,43]. Periosteal reactions are highly unusual in metastatic cancer, except in prostate, breast and gastrointestinal tumors, but the latter rarely produce bone metastases [41].…”
