Prognostic role of serum carbohydrate antigen 19-9 levels in patients with resectable hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract: Serum levels of carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) were shown to be associated with poorer prognosis in several cancers, but the prognostic role of CA 19-9 levels in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma was unclear. A retrospective cohort of 97 patients with resectable hepatocellular carcinoma was performed to assess the prognostic role of CA 19-9 levels on overall survival in hepatocellular carcinoma. Both Kaplan-Meier product-limit method and multivariate analysis were performed to determine the prognosti… Show more

“…12,13 Therefore, novel promising candidates, single or in combination with AFP, need to be accumulated. During recent years, CA19-9 and CEA were revealed to be prognostic in HCC after different treatments [18][19][20][21][22] but less focused on patients after hepatectomy. 18,21 Among them, AFP was not included as an assessed variable by some authors.…”

“…CA 19-9 is a well-established biomarker for pancreatic carcinoma, and has also been reported to be positive in other types of gastrointestinal cancers including gastric cancer, cholangiocarcinoma and colorectal cancer [2]. The level of CA 19-9 is also of great value for envisaging the prognosis of the disease, estimating the severity of the disease and predicting recurrence.…”
