Prognostic Role and Clinical Significance of Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocyte (TIL) and Programmed Death Ligand 1 (PD-L1) Expression in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC): A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Study

Abstract: This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), their associations with the clinicopathological characteristics, and the association between their levels in patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, ProQuest, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were searched to obtain the relevant papers. Seven studies with 1152 patients were included in this study. Like the level of TILs, ther… Show more

“…Studies evaluating the prognostic implications of PD-L1 in BC have reported conflicting results. Some reported a positive association between PD-L1 and survival [30][31][32][33][34], whereas others found a negative association [17,25,26] or no association at all [35]. However, these findings must be interpreted with care, because PD-L1 expression may be differentially regulated on tumor or immune cells [29,36,37], and previous studies have highlighted the importance of studying the expression of this molecule in both types of cell [29].…”

“…The overexpression of PD-L1 and CTL-A4 on the tumoral cells shields the tumoral cells from immune responses. Based on recent meta-analyses, there has been a remarkable association between tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and tumoral PD-L1 expression in triple-negative breast cancer and melanoma ( 55 , 171 ). Despite an increased level of tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte, the PD-L1 up-regulation in tumors represses anti-tumoral immune responses ( 172 , 173 ).…”
