“…Coers (1954) and Wohlfart (1955) have described the same process in human muscle during recovery from poliomyelitis. If the muscles of patients in the recovering stages of poliomyelitis are examined with concentric needle electrodes it is found that the mean amplitude and the mean duration of the action potentials are greater than normal (Hertz, Madsen, and Buchthal, 1954). It is reasonable to regard these large action potentials as originating from motor units enlarged by collateral sprouting.…”
