Prognostic impact of preoperative serum interleukin‑6 levels in patients with early‑stage oral squamous cell carcinoma, defined by sentinel node biopsy

Abstract: Abstract. Failure to detect recurrence and lymph node metastasis early represents a fundamental barrier to the improvement of survival rate in early stage oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The present study evaluated the association between serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) level and clinical outcomes in patients with early stage OSCC patients defined by sentinel node biopsy (SNB). A total of 53 patients with clinical stage I/II OSCC who underwent SNB were enrolled. SNB was determined by a radioisotope method, and… Show more

“…11 Preoperative IL-6 elevation appears to be a major risk factor for postoperative delirium in the elderly, 12 and has been associated with higher cancer recurrence. 13,14 Association of Elevated Postoperative Plasma MCP-1 and IL-6 Levels With Postoperative Outcome Similar to the preoperative values, a MCP-1 elevation 24 hours after lung transplantation correlates with primary graft dysfunction. 15 In elderly patients, increased MCP-1 values are associated with delirium.…”

“…Two authors individually collected data from included articles in forms commensurate with each other. Diagnostic accuracy, represented by DOR, summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve, and area under the curve (AUC), was calculated 1,5,11–102 . DOR was calculated as (true positive [TP]/false positive [FP])/(false negative [FN]/true negative [TN]) to assess diagnostic accuracy with 95% confidence intervals (CIs).…”

“…For example, we found that IL6 was produced at high levels by SCC9 cells, but at moderate levels by SCC4 cells. In OSCC, the high expression of IL6 is related to worse prognosis (18,19), and increased invasion, metastasis, and chemoresistance (20,21). The two cell lines used in the present study were chosen for their ability to simulate the various OSCC phenotypes; which probably influenced the results (22).…”
