Prognostic impact of combined immunoprofiles in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma patients with respect to AJCC 8th edition

Abstract: Combined immunoprofiles of p16, EGFR, and CD44 might provide valuable prognostic and predictive information for the individual OPSCC patients, especially in terms of response to IMRT and prediction of treatment outcomes. Application of the AJCC 8th edition staging for HPV+ OPSCC proved to improve hazard discrimination and prognostication of OPSCC.

“…On the other hand, recent studies have been starting to investigate the role of the HPV status, and demonstrated, for instance, that the application of the TNM 8th ed. is more suitable for HPV-mediated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (Gurin et al, 2018;Mizumachi et al, 2017). Preliminary results also showed that NLR maintained its prognostic value both in HPV-positive and non-HPV-related tumours.…”

“…p16, EGFR, and CD44 immunohistochemical analysis. All immunohistochemical (IHC) analyses were performed as described previously (9). Briefly, sections from the FFPE primary biopsy samples, obtained prior to the treatment, were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and were independently reviewed by two pathologists.…”

“…U nádorů hlavy a krku asociovaných s kouřením hrají hlavní roli v procesu kancerogeneze mutace tumor supresorových genů TP53, které nacházíme minoritně u HPV asociovaných nádorů [23,24]. Oproti HPV asociovaným nádorům tyto navíc zvýšeně exprimují geny asociované s hypoxií a markery nádorových kmenových buněk, které zvyšují jejich radiorezistenci [25][26][27]. Bylo prokázáno, že počet mutací u HPV pozitivních nádorů je poloviční oproti HPV negativním nádorům [28].…”
