Prognostic factors in head and neck cancer: a 10-year retrospective analysis in a single-institution in Italy

Show more

“…This particuliarity allowed us to accomplish a precise analysis of associations between selected SNPs and LSCC development, with a concrete tumor in one anatomical region of head and neck. It is well known from clinical practice that LSCC (notably, the glottis cancer) is characterized as less aggressive in accordance with local spreading and low metastatic rate compared to other HNSCC (72,73). Thus, not identified discrepancies of IL-10: rs1800871, rs1800872, rs1800896 variants distribution between this low aggressive LSCC patients' and sex-matched control subjects is comprehensible.…”

“…This uniqueness enabled us to perform a precise analysis of associations between selected SNPs and LSCC development and of survival rate with a particular tumour in a specific head and neck anatomical region. According to already confirmed and analysed LSCC behaviour, LSCC is presented as less aggressive compared to other HNSCC, assuming rather low metastatic rate and local spreading [ 63 ]. Therefore, the results of the present study showing the absence of differences in IL-9 rs1859430, rs2069870, rs11741137, rs2069885, and rs2069884 variants distribution between LSCC tumour patients and sex-matched control subjects are apprehensible.…”

“…33 Age has a negative impact on prognosis of HNC. 2 It is also regarded as an independent predictor of outcome, morbidity, and mortality due to decreased cardiac output, impaired renal blood flow, along with reduction in pulmonary function with advancing age. 34 In addition to this, elderly patients are less resistant to postoperative infections due to the progressive impairment of the immune system.…”

“…Head and neck cancer (HNC) has been reported as the sixth most common cancer globally, 1 with more than 600 000 newly diagnosed cases each year. 2 According to the National Central Cancer Registry of China, cancer statistics of China 2015, the total incidence of oral cavity and pharyngolaryngeal cancer was estimated as 48.1 per 100 000 with a mortality of 22.1, and incidence of nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) was estimated as 60.6 with a mortality of 34.1 in China, in 72 local population-based cancer registries. 3 The incidence of HNC also has a large geographical variability across China.…”
