We recently developed a method to generate myeloid cells with proliferation capacity from human iPS cells. iPS-ML (iPS-cell–derived myeloid/macrophage line), generated by introducing proliferation and anti-senescence factors into iPS-cell–derived myeloid cells, grew continuously in an M-CSF–dependent manner. A large number of cells exhibiting macrophage-like properties can be readily obtained by using this technology. In the current study, we evaluated the possible application of iPS-ML in anti-cancer therapy. We established a model of peritoneally disseminated gastric cancer by intraperitoneally injecting NUGC-4 human gastric cancer cells into SCID mice. When iPS-ML were injected intraperitoneally into the mice with pre-established peritoneal NUGC-4 tumors, iPS-ML massively accumulated and infiltrated into the tumor tissues. iPS-ML expressing IFN-β (iPS-ML/IFN-β) significantly inhibited the intra-peritoneal growth of NUGC-4 cancer. Furthermore, iPS-ML/IFN-β also inhibited the growth of human pancreatic cancer MIAPaCa-2 in a similar model. iPS-ML are therefore a promising treatment agent for peritoneally disseminated cancers, for which no standard treatment is currently available.

Online Monitoring of Flexural Damage Index of a Cable‐Stayed Bridge

This work introduces a recent application of the online nondestructive damage assessment system into a cable-stayed bridge. A set of ambient modal parameters are automatically extracted every 20 minutes using real-time signal data collected from a total of 26 accelerometers attached on the deck plate of the bridge. Then, a set of modal flexibilities are reconstructed by the combination of the extracted modal parameters with the approximated modal mass of the girder. Next, the curvature of the modal flexibility is approximated by a central difference formula. Finally, the set of flexural damage index equations is constructed by comparing the modal curvature of the damaged state to that of the undamaged state. Solving the overdetermined flexural damage index equations, the desired damage index is finally quantified. The resulting index clearly indicates the location and severity of the potential structural damage on the girder. Based on the overall performance of the implemented health monitoring system, the bridge operator’s damage index control criteria are set to ±20% of the undamaged state.

The Benefits of Resection for Gastric Carcinoma Patients with Non-curative Factors

The benefits of resection for gastric carcinoma patients with non-curative factors remain controversial. Thus, we evaluated the survival benefits of resection in these gastric carcinoma patients. We reviewed the hospital records of 467 gastric carcinoma patients with non-curative factors who had resection (n=305) and compared their clinicopathological findings with individuals (n=162) who underwent bypass or exploration from 1996 to 2010. The 3-year survival rate of patients who had resection was higher than was that of patients who did not (13.2 vs. 7.2%, respectively p<0.001). Cox's proportional hazard regression analysis revealed that only one factor was an independent, statistically significant prognostic parameter: the presence of peritoneal dissemination (risk ratio, 1.37; 95% confidence interval, 1.04–1.79; p<0.05). The 3-year survival rate of patients with peritoneal dissemination was higher in individuals who underwent resection compared with those who did not (9.5 vs. 4.7%, respectively; p<0.001). The current results highlight the improved survival rates of gastric carcinoma patients with non-curative factors who underwent surgery compared with those who did not. Although resection is not curative in this group of patients, we still recommend performing the procedure.
