Prognostic factors and survival according to tumour subtype in women presenting with breast cancer bone metastases at initial diagnosis: a SEER-based study

Abstract: Background Tumour subtype has a significant effect on bone metastasis in breast cancer, but population-based estimates of the prognosis of patients with bone metastases at breast cancer diagnosis are lacking. The aim of this study was to analyse the influence of tumour subtype and other factors on the prognosis and survival of patients with bone metastases of breast cancer. Methods Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program data from 2012 to 2016, a retrospective cohort study was con… Show more

“…Previous studies focused on BCBM patients of all ages confirmed that lung metastases was an independent risk factors. 32 , 33 Combined with the results of this study, we found that lung metastasis appears to be an age-specific prognostic factor for BCBM patients. However, the mechanism of this results needs to be further studied and whether this phenomenon also exists in other tumors deserves further study.…”

“…A significant difference in survival was not revealed among various races, which was congruent with some previous studies ( 13 , 17 ). However, other studies found race was an independent prognostic factor among BC with bone metastasis ( 15 , 16 ). Tumor grade is usually recognized as an independent risk factor for the prognosis of BC ( 16 , 18 ).…”

“…On the whole, the prognosis of male BC with bone metastasis (3-year OS and CSS rates: 36.7% and 39.5%) was worse than that of female patients (3-year OS and CSS rates: 51.7% and 53.6%) ( 13 ), suggesting that the prognosis and treatments of such patients need more attention. Previous studies indicated that older BC patients were prone to bone metastasis ( 14 ) and age was an important independent predictor of survival ( 15 , 16 ). Our multivariable results also highlighted this finding in male BC patients with bone metastasis.…”

“…Previous studies have shown that race is an independent risk factor that affects the occurrence and prognosis of breast cancer bone metastases. 9 , 10 Therefore, the establishment of risk and prognostic models for Asian females with BCBM is conducive to more precise and individualized prevention and treatment of this disease.…”
