Prognostic criteria in an epidemiological group of patients with multiple sclerosis: an exploratory study

Abstract: Demographic and clinical features and data on medical history and prior environmental exposure collected during an epidemiological long-term study of multiple sclerosis (MS) were tested for their possible prognostic value. Fifty-two benign MS patients were compared with 29 patients having a malignant course. A primary or secondary progressive course and cerebellar/lower brain-stem symptoms at onset indicated an unfavourable course, whereas no predictive value of sex or of any other type of onset symptomatology… Show more

“…According to some previous studies, the initial cerebellar, 9,36 psychiatric and urinary symptoms, 21,29 were found to be the unfavourable features. On the other hand, the presence of sensory symptoms at onset was frequently reported to indicate the better prognosis.…”

“…Buffer density ( ρ = 1.0347 g ml −1 ) and viscosity ( η = 0.0138 Poise) at 20°C, measured with a picnometer and a Ubehlode viscometer were used to correct the sedimentation coefficient values to standard conditions (s 20,w , viscosity and density of the water, and 20°C). SEDNTERP software (Lauer and Firnhaber, ) was used to estimate the partial specific volume of PctA‐LBR and PctB‐LBR (0.737 and 0.731 ml g −1 respectively) from the amino acid sequence. Sedimentation equilibrium (SE) data were acquired for 150 μl samples, using 150 μl polybuffer as reference, at three different speeds (13 500, 22 000 and 27 000 r.p.m.)…”

“…Despite these differences, the overall trend of longitudinal studies has been that benign MS is a temporary condition [2,4,5,12,14,34]. Population-based cohorts tend to have more benign cases than hospital-based cohorts, while a longer follow-up time tends to give fewer benign cases compared to a shorter follow-up time because of the increasing conversion from benign to nonbenign disease over time [7,12,26,36].…”
