Prognostic Correlations between ABO Blood Group and Pre-Treatment Plasma Epstein-Barr Virus DNA in Patients with Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Receiving Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy

Abstract: PurposeThe objective of this study is to assess the prognostic value of ABO blood group in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treated by intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT).Patients and MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the data on 1397 patients with non-metastatic, newly diagnosed NPC treated using IMRT. Patient survival between different ABO blood groups were compared using log-rank test. Cox hazards model was adopted to establish independent prognostic factors.ResultsIn our study, the distribution of the A… Show more

“…Recently, there is increasing evidence showing that the ABO blood group is involved in the pathophysiology of various diseases such as cardiovascular and neoplastic disorders. 7 , 8 The correlations of ABO blood group with survival have been evaluated in various types of malignancies, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma, 9 ovarian cancer, 10 , 11 colon cancer, 12 and breast cancer. 13 A risk of developing cancer of the pancreas, stomach, and pharynx has been shown using 1.6 million blood donors from Swedish and Danish populations.…”

“…So these results may help to further confirm that A blood type may have no prognostic value in NPC. Peng et al 24 showed that ABO blood type was not an independent prognostic factor for DFS, OS, DMFS or LRFS after adjusting for plasma Epstein-Barr virus deoxyribonucleic acid (EBV-DNA). There might be some prognostic value in ABO blood type but offset by adjusting for plasma EBV-DNA.…”

“…The correlation between ABO blood type and NPC remains controversial. Some researches demonstrated the absence of an association between ABO blood type and NPC 22-24. Other studies indicated that the ABO blood type was related to NPC susceptibility, for instance A blood type increased risks, mainly in male patients 25-27.…”

“…Although early‐stage NPC can be cured in the majority of cases, numerous NPC patients are diagnosed with advanced stage, and NPC metastasis commonly contributes to an unfavorable prognosis . The 5‐year survival rates of NPC patients are 87% to 96% for stage I‐II disease and 67% to 77% for stage III‐IV disease . Given its complicated structure and high degree of radiation sensitivity, the primary therapeutic option for NPC is radiotherapy .…”
