Progesterone receptor expression in orbital cavernous hemangiomas

Abstract: Orbital cavernous hemangiomas (OCH) have thick and highly cellular vascular walls. Ultrastructural studies have demonstrated the smooth muscle nature of these cells. Vascular neoplasms can modify their morphological and clinical features under hormonal stimulation. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the presence of smooth muscle markers and sex steroid receptors in 12 cases of OCH. Orbital cases were compared with cutaneous hemangiomas and subcutaneous angioleiomyomas. Smooth muscle actin (SMA… Show more

“…Progesterone receptors may influence angioleiomyoma development. 13,16) In the present case, the tumor showed negativity for both progesterone receptors and estrogen receptors. On cytogenetic studies, angioleiomyomas have near-diploid karyotypes, but no consistent abnormalities have been detected.…”

“…This role has previously been reported in other anatomic locations, especially during pregnancy or in the course of the menstrual cycle. [13][14][15] However, one should keep in mind that in our case, another factor contributing to the volume reduction of the small mass might have been the removal of the 4 14-gauge cores.…”

“…This suggests that the vascular wall mainly consists of proliferated smooth muscle cells. 5) In fact, Ki-67 antigen was expressed mostly in the smooth muscle cells, indicating the growth potential of the smooth muscle cells.…”

“…Progesterone receptor is present in orbital CHs and may be related to the growth of orbital CHs. 5,13,29) The growth of orbital CHs may be hormone dependent, since some orbital CHs grow during pregnancy, 28) suggesting another mechanism controlling the growth of orbital CHs.…”
