The purpose of this study was conducted to evaluate the use of a system of timed artificial insemination (TAI) and early diagnosis of pregnancy in Nelore beef cows in order to reduce the breeding season (BS) from 150 to 90 days and analyze the factors affecting the conception rate of cows selected for TAI. The study included 110 Nelore cows belonging to the Experimental Farm Capim Branco, Brazil. The body condition scores (BCS) were evaluated, and those above 2.50 were included in the TAI protocol. Five groups of cows were formed at intervals of 21 days postpartum and then commenced a 9-day progesterone protocol. Progesterone devices were used three times. Statistical analysis of binary variables was performed by logistic regression in the program Proc Logistic of Sas. A 5% of significance (P < 0.05) was used to determine the presence of statistical differences and the effect of independent variables on conception rate. The TAI and early diagnosis of pregnancy reduces the BS from 150 to 90 days without changing the pregnancy rate. The conception rate was not affected by the presence of the calf (P > 0.05), the corpus luteum (P > 0.05), the BCS (P > 0.05), or the number of reuses of the intravaginal progesterone device (P > 0.05). Therefore, this technique is beneficial for breeding Nelore beef cattle and can be used in anestrous cows with a BCS above 2.50. Additionally, the progesterone devices can be reused to reduce the cost of the protocol without compromising the results.

RESUMENObjetivo. Evaluar las concentraciones de progesterona, la manifestación de estro y las tasas de preñez en vacas Bos indicus sometidas a varios protocolos de sincronización del estro con un implante de norgestomet usado previamente. Materiales y métodos. Sesenta vacas recibieron un implante auricular de norgestomet reutilizado y fueron distribuidas en uno de cuatro protocolos: (1) benzoato de estradiol (BE) + progesterona (P 4 ) + prostaglandina F 2α (PG) (BE+P 4 +PG); (2) valerato de estradiol (VE) + norgestomet (NG) (VE+NG); (3) el mismo protocolo BE+P 4 +PG, asociado con 400 UI de gonadotropina coriónica equina (eCG) (BE+P 4 +PG+eCG); (4) el mismo protocolo VE+NG, asociado con 400 UI de eCG (VE+NG+eCG). El implante fue removido el día 9, con inseminación artificial (IA) 12 horas después de la detección del estro. La preñez fue diagnosticada 45 días después de la IA. Las muestras de sangre fueron tomadas los días 0, 4 y 9 (después de colocar el implante) para el análisis de progesterona por RIA. Resultados. En el día 4, las concentraciones de progesterona fueron menores en vacas tratadas con BE+P 4 +PG (0.90 ± 0.73 ng/ml; p<0.01). Las vacas que recibieron VE+NG+eCG tuvieron mayor concentración de progesterona en plasma (p<0.05) en el día 9 (4.72 ± 0.79 ng/mL) que otros protocolos. Hubo mayor porcentaje de detección de estro (p<0.05) en vacas tratadas con VE+NG+eCG (66.7%). Las tasas de preñez no fueron afectadas por los protocolos (p>0.05). Conclusiones. Los implantes de norgestomet reutilizados fueron eficaces para sincronizar el estro y alcanzar tasas de preñez adecuadas en vacas Brahman.Palabras clave: eCG, estradiol, ganado de carne, progesterona, prostaglandinas (Fuente: Agrovoc). The majority of beef cow herds in South America are constituted by Bos indicus females, which have particular reproductive features that contribute to reduced reproductive efficiency compared with that of B. taurus cohorts. Hence, several alternatives to enhance reproductive efficiency of B. indicus heifers and cows have been developed to address their inherent reproductive shortcomings. These research-based technologies are being described in detail within this chapter and have already made an impact on South American B. indicus-based production systems. These include the following: (a) hormonal protocols to induce puberty in nulliparous heifers or estrous cyclicity in postpartum cows to maximize their reproductive performance during the subsequent breeding season, (b) hormonal protocols to synchronize estrus and/or ovulation in B. indicus females to exploit their reproductive responses to artificial insemination, and (c) genetic and environmental factors that influence reproductive success in beef herds, including reproductive diseases and excitable temperament of B. indicus females, that have been investigated to support/promote the development of appropriate mitigation technologies.
