Profound hearing loss following surgery in pediatric patients with posterior fossa low-grade glioma

Abstract: Children undergoing surgery for posterior fossa low-grade glioma are at risk for UHL, which may be related to race or extent of resection. These patients should receive postoperative audiologic testing, as earlier intervention may improve outcomes.

“…The participants in these studies had motor complications (fine-motor skills and balance), difficulties in school and behavioural and emotional adjustment disturbances [ 15 , 17 , 23 ]. Ghazwani et al [ 31 ] reported hearing-loss following surgery, but we were unable to replicate these findings. In a study by Sadighi et al [ 32 ] a prediagnostic symptom interval > 3 months affected some functionally important neurologic outcomes, but in our study we could not find this.…”

“…Overall, the prevalence of significant (SIOP grade 3/4) ototoxicity in our cohort was lower than that in patients with embryonal tumors, because of using carboplatin rather than cisplatin in LGG/LGGNT and only few patients receiving significant RT doses to the posterior fossa, which are both predictors of hearing impairment in pediatric brain tumor survivors . However, infant LGG/LGGNT survivors still require regular, age‐appropriate auditory evaluations because both the surgery itself and carboplatin use are associated with hearing loss, especially with initiation before 6 months of age for the latter …”
