The study investigates socio-economics and management practices of turkey and guinea fowl in Kaduna metropolis Kaduna State. Fifty turkey and guinea fowl producers were randomly selected from 25 communities in the area. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics was used to analyzed the data collected. The results showed that 32% of the producers used personal saving as their source of funds because of bottlenecks associated with bank loans and also, because of pressure of payment from friends/relatives. The results further show that 94% of the producers reared their turkey and guinea fowl in steel cages as they were staying in rented houses. The production practices practiced by the producers include proper sanitation, routine vaccination, and curative measures. Majority of the producers fed their birds with commercial feed so that they will grow fast enough to reach table size, while 72% supplement with grains or by products such as wheat offal or maize offal in addition to commercial feed. In addition, majority (66%) fed their birds with borehole water, 10% with well water, 16% with tap water and 8% with any available water. It can be concluded from this investigation that Meleaagris gallopavo and Numida meleagris are resources that could form a lucrative enterprise in the study area with minimum funds and human capital involvement. Therefore, there is room for improvement through availability funds for expansion.

Broilers are fast-growing birds and serve as a means of white meat highly rich in protein with low cholesterol compared with other livestock. Despite this, there is a dearth of information on its profitability in Nigeria. This study, therefore, investigated the profitability of commercial broiler production enterprise and its determinants in Osun state Nigeria. Data were collected from 200 commercial broiler farmers under the Poultry Association of Nigeria and analysed using descriptive statistics, gross margin and multiple regression. The results revealed that the broiler production enterprise had a gross margin of ₦692,961.83 (USD 1,680.15), a net income of ₦568,036.14 (USD 1,377.26), a benefit-cost ratio of 2.53, an operating cost of 0.26 and 1.53 return on capital invested. These show that the broiler production enterprise was profitable. Cost of feed and disease outbreaks were factors that inhibit the profitability of broiler production venture while years of broiler farming experience, flock size, annual income, access to agricultural extension and access to credit were enhancing factors for the profitability of broiler production enterprise. The extremely severe constraints faced in broiler production were disease outbreaks, inadequate capital and the high cost of feeds. These findings call for government and policy intervention to enhance broiler production profitability. This could be achieved through subsidising the cost of feed, provision of vaccines and drugs to prevent and control disease outbreaks and provision of financial support in the form of credit.

Information is a critical factor in the farming business as the survival of the participants relies on their ability to access innovations and meet the dynamic challenges of the sector. This study analysed the information needs of poultry farmers in Adamawa State, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design, and a multistage sampling technique to collect data (from 113 poultry farmers) for the study. Descriptive statistics, a three-point rating scale, and the Ordinary Least Square regression model were used to analyse the data collected. The findings of the study indicated that the prominent information sources among the farmers were: the internet, acquaintances/friends, and radio. Similarly, the study revealed that the respondents require information on various aspects of poultry production. Based on the results, age, household size, educational level, and membership in association negatively influence poultry farmers’ information needs, whereas gender, farm size, and farming experience have shown a positive influence on the farmers’ information needs. Hence, the study emphasised the need for the government and other actors in the agricultural sector to employ and also motivate agricultural extension workers to widen the scope of their reach using the internet.
