Azo dyes like Drimaren Red CL-5B (DR, CI Reactive Red 241) represent a class of compounds extensively used in the textile industry and are extremely dangerous to the environment and human health. Therefore, understanding the binding characteristics between such substances and biological macromolecules is essential from a toxic-kinetic perspective. The molecular interaction between DR and Human Serum Albumin (HSA) was investigated through spectroscopic techniques and molecular docking approaches. The results indicate that DR quenches HSA fluorescence following a static mechanism (corroborated by UV-Vis studies) with a moderate interaction (Ka~105 M-1), guided by electrostatic interactions (DS> 0 and DH< 0). DR is 5.52 nm distant from fluorophore residue Trp-214 (according to FRET investigations), and the interaction is mainly related to Tyr residues (as revealed by synchronous fluorescence). The Ellman assay identified a decrease in the content of HSA free thiol. The results of the RLS demonstrate that there are HSA alterations, suggesting damage to the confirmation of the protein. Molecular docking suggests the binding site of DR was located in subdomain IIB HSA, corroborating the experimental properties. Finally, the results suggest a high potential for DR toxicity triggered by contact with key proteins, which affects the biomolecule functionalities.

Recycling waste biomass into valuable products (e.g., nanomaterials) is of considerable theoretical and practical significance to achieve future sustainable development. Here, we propose a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis route to convert waste tobacco stems into biomass-based N, S-codoped carbon dots (C−dots) with the assistance of carbon black. Unlike most of the previously reported luminescent C−dots, these biomass-based C−dots showed a satisfactory stability, as well as an excitation-independent fluorescence emission at ~520 nm. Furthermore, they demonstrated a pH-dependent fluorescence emission ability, offering a scaffold to design pH-responsive assays. Moreover, these as-synthesized biomass-based C−dots exhibited a fluorescence response ability toward tetracycline antibiotics (TCs, e.g., TC, CTC, and OTC) through the inner filter effect (IFE), thereby allowing for the establishment a smart analytical platform to sensitively and selectively monitor residual TCs in real environmental water samples. In this study, we explored the conversion of waste tobacco stems into sustainable biomass-based C−dots to develop simple, efficient, label-free, reliable, low-cost, and eco-friendly analytical platforms for environmental pollution traceability analysis, which might provide a novel insight to resolve the ecological and environmental issues derived from waste tobacco stems.

Herein, the hydrophobic carboxyl-functionalized ionic liquid (IL-COOH) was encapsulated into the prepared Fe3O4@Zr-MOFs, and the novel water-stable IL-COOH/Fe3O4@Zr-MOF nanocomposites were first synthesized. The polydopamine-functionalized Fe3O4 was introduced to construct the core–shell structure via layer-by-layer modification, and the controlled growth of Zr-MOFs was achieved, which realized the adjustment of charged properties of nanocomposites and simplified the adsorption or extraction process. The IL-COOH/Fe3O4@Zr-MOFs were fully studied by IR, HNMR, XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, TEM, EDS mapping, VSM, and so on. Then, they were employed for the selective adsorption and detection of fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs). The adsorption isotherms and kinetics demonstrated that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Among them, IL-COOH/Fe3O4@UiO-67-bpydc showed the best adsorption performance, and the maximum adsorption capacity of ofloxacin was 438.5 mg g–1. Coupled magnetic solid-phase extraction with HPLC-DAD, a convenient, sensitive, and efficient method for extraction and detection of FQs in environmental water, was developed based on IL-COOH/Fe3O4@UiO-67-bpydc. The recoveries of environmental water were ranging from 90.0 to 110.0%, and the detection limits were lower than 0.02 μg L–1. The novel functionalized composites served as solid-phase adsorbents and liquid-phase extractants. This study also provided a promising strategy for designing and preparing multi-functionalized nanocomposites for the removal or detection of pollutants in environmental samples.
