Profiling of Phytosterols, Tocopherols and Tocotrienols in Selected Seed Oils from Botswana by GC–MS and HPLC

Abstract: The phytosterol, tocopherol, and tocotrienol profiles for mkukubuyo, Sterculia africana, manketti, Ricinodendron rautanenni, mokolwane, Hyphaene petersiana, morama, Tylosema esculentum, and moretologa-kgomo, Ximenia caffra, seed oils from Botswana have been determined. Normal-phase HPLC analysis of the unsaponifiable matter showed that among the selected oils, the most abundant tocopherol and tocotrienol were c-tocopherol (2232.99 lg/g)

“…Also, they discovered that manketti/mungongo oil had acid values 1.6%, the peroxide value 10 (mg/kg), and the solidification point of -7 • C, suggesting that this oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids. Mitei et al (2009) did profiling of phytosterols, tocopherols and tocotrienols in selected seed oils from Botswana by GC-MS and HPLC, a study included manketti seeds oil. It was discovered that, mungongo seeds oil was rich in γ -tocopherol and β-sitosterol.…”

“…The immature seeds are rich in proteins containing around 21% (w/w) (Mosele et al, 2011). Other studies have focused on the quality of marama bean oil (Mitei et al, 2008) and characterisation of the fatty acids, phytosterols and vitamin E compounds in the oil (Mitei et al, 2009).…”

“…Steam deacidification destroys all the carotenoids present in the CRPO. Phytosterols constitute the bulk of unsaponifiable matter of palm oil and have bioactive properties such as anticancer and plasma total cholesterol lowering effects 29 . Bonnie and Choo reported that sterol content of commercial red palm olein was higher than refined, bleached and deodorized palm oil 30 .…”
