Profiling of melatonin in the model tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) cultivar Micro‐Tom

Abstract: Melatonin exists in a considerable variety of plant species. However, the physiological roles of melatonin in plants are not well understood. In this study, the distribution and accumulation of melatonin during leaf and fruit development were analyzed in Micro-Tom, a model cultivar of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Melatonin was extracted using an acetone-methanol method and measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Melatonin was detected in leaves, stems, roots, flowers, fruits, seedlings and seeds in… Show more

“…The high level of this compound was found in flower buds of Datura metel L. but it decreased following the floral development (Murch et al 2009a). MEL was found also in fruits such as strawberries, kiwis, pineapples, bananas, apples and in grapes (Hattori et al 1995;Iriti et al 2006;Sae-Teaw et al 2013) as well as tart cherries (Manchester et al 2000) and tomatoes (Van Tassel and O'Neill 2001;Okazaki and Ezura 2009). This may be related to their high sensitivity to environmental stresses including UV radiation during buds development and plant growth (Murch et al 2009a).…”

“…Melatonin was detected in all tomato organs at different developmental stages [37,41,42]. In young leaf tissues, melatonin reached a maximum of 6 ng/g FW, whereas, in berries, its content increased gradually from the mature green stage, both in pericarp and locular tissues, up to 2.8 and 3.4 ng/g FW, respectively, at mature red stage (Table 1) [37]. A great variability in melatonin content of tomato berries has been also reported, with authors reporting 0.032, 0.5 and 0.3 ng/g [36,43,44].…”

“…By 1540, the first cultivations were reported in the Mediterranean area, where the climate was optimal for growing [38][39][40].
