Profiles of Resilience and Growth in Youth With Cancer and Healthy Comparisons

Abstract: PTS and PTG appear to be relatively independent constructs, and their relation is dependent on contextual factors. The majority of youth appear to be resilient, and even those who experience significant distress were able to find benefit.

“…Following data extraction and preliminary analyses, an email was sent to the authors of all 23 studies requesting unreported Pearson correlations for the specific variables measured in each study. Three authors provided additional relevant data; one indicated that the data requested from 2 studies were in fact from the same dataset. The more recent study was excluded from the results.…”

“…Although its results show a slightly positive correlation (r = 0.11), according to the authors, its significance is caused by a very large number of respondents. According to Tillery et al [27], PTG within the specific context of cancer is more likely to be experienced without PTSS. Our results are consistent with this assertion, but the possibility of a nonlinear relation, proposed, for example, by Levine et al [24], in which PTG is the highest at intermediate PTSS, cannot be ruled out either.…”

“…The fourth view considers PTSS and PTG to be independent of each other [26]. Tillery et al [27] suggest that the relationship of PTSS and PTG depends on the context of the examination and that PTG within the specific context of cancer is more likely to be experienced without PTSS.…”

“…Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common cancer among children younger than 15 years of age . Modern treatments have increased the overall 5‐year survival rates to over 85%; most survivors, parents, and families adapt well to this traumatic event, indicating psychological competent state and resilience . However, some survivors are still vulnerable to significant late effects, which can disrupt family functioning as family members must adjust their daily routines to cope with the child's acute and late effects.…”
