and Istituto Sperimentale per l'Agrumicoltura, Corso Savoia 190, I-95024 Acireale (CT), ItalyThe chemical composition of the essential oils of two new Citrus hybrids, obtained by crossbreeding the diploid clementine Citrus clementina Hort. ex Tan. and the tetraploid orange Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck cv. Tarocco, was studied by GC/MS. In all, 42 components were fully characterized and grouped into four classes (monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and aliphatic aldehydes and alcohols) for an easier comparison with the oils of the parents. Since limonene is by far the main component of all the essential oils examined, representing generally ca. 95% of the total, significant hybrid-hybrid and parent-hybrid differences can be observed only within the remaining 5%. These new hybrids are the first example of a mandarin-like hybrid with a red pigmentation, a feature inherited from the Tarocco orange. These new fruits, therefore, add further to the very high production of pigmented citrus fruits, which are an almost exclusive patrimony of Sicilian citrus production. This pigmentation is due to the presence of anthocyanins, whose known antioxidant activity gives them an important biological role in the disease prevention of living systems.

The physicochemical properties of essential oil of a new citrus hybrid obtained in Calabria by crossbreeding the diploid clementine and the tetraploid lemon, were examined by means of analytical determinations and by GC and GUMS. The 82 components were detected by GC analysis, 31 of which were identified. On the other hand, by GC/MS determinations, 105 components were detected and 13 new components were fully characterized. It is evident that the oil composition is influenced by the parents. The inonoterpene hydrocarbons represent 97.84%, and the main component being limonene. Examination of the aldehydes revealed that geranial found in tetraploid lemon oil was absent in the hybrid oil and neral was present only in 0.01%.

The chemical composition of the essential oil of a new Citrus hybrid, named Cami, obtained by crossbreeding the Mapo tangelo (Citrus deliciosa Ten. x C. paradisi Macf.) as male parent and the 50-15A-6 hybrid (C. clementina Hort. ex Tan. x C. deliciosa Ten.) as female parent, was analyzed by GC/MS and compared with those of its parents. In total, 51 components were fully characterized and grouped in six classes (monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, aliphatic aldehydes, aliphatic alcohols, esters) for an easier comparison of all oils. Variations during the fruit development of the percentage of the six classes are also described. A statistical treatment by linear discriminant analysis (LDA) of the compositional data from GC analyses was also carried out. The peel essential oil of the new Citrus hybrid Cami shows compositional features resembling those of Mapo tangelo and Avana mandarin, but in an original and unique way, thus making it an interesting new Citrus essential oil. Furthermore, the new fruit on account of its excellent characteristics is already in production.
