Profile of disabilities and their associated factors in patients with type 2 diabetes evaluated by the Canadian occupational performance measure: the Rio De Janeiro type 2 diabetes cohort study

Abstract: Type 2 diabetic patients frequently reported disabilities in mobility, self-care and daily-life domains; and its associated factors were the presence of depression, upper limb pain and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Implications for Rehabilitation The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) instrument can be applied to patients with diabetes, as it identifies several disabilities, mostly in mobility, self-care and domestic life areas. Rehabilitation directed to upper limb pain/limitation and to lower… Show more

“…The sensorimotor control of the hand is of great importance for physical functioning and dexterity of the hand, but also for sensory information about objects [45]. More than 53% of patients with diabetes report mobility impairment and daily life limitations caused by restrictions and pain in both hands and feet [46]. Mechanistically, loss of tactile acuity and impaired proprioceptive feedback control are likely to contribute to these functional limitations.…”

“…Furthermore, no change in renal and hepatic function tests and any hematological index was found. Because osteoarthritis is frequently associated with type 2 diabetes (32) and may result in several disabilities (33), diacerein may be the first-line treatment in place of salicylates or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in patients with osteoarthritis and type 2 diabetes because of its greater cardiorenal safety. Of note, the European Medicines Agency endorsed restrictions to diacerein use because of risks of severe diarrhea and hepatotoxicity in patients with previous liver disease (34).…”

“…Higher values on SF-36 mean better quality of life in these domains. Subjects were also interviewed to identify the activities that they presented greater difficulty to perform by the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), as previously described [17]. Higher values in the COPM mean better occupational performance.…”
