IntroductionMental health problems in adolescents are inadequately researched in low-resource settings. We aimed in this study to assess the prevalence of mental health problems and correlates in school children aged 13–17 years and compare differences between urban and rural schools in Anand District, Gujarat.Methods and analysisA cross-sectional study was conducted in five Gujarati medium higher secondary schools in Anand, Gujarat. Six hundred and ninety-three students with equal distribution of boys and girls belonging to 9th to 12th grades were included in the study. Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was used to assess the mental health status of the students, and total difficulties scoring was used to categorise participants into normal (0–15) and high (borderline (16–19) and abnormal (20–40)). Socio-demographic data and Teenage Screening Questionnaire-Trivandrum (TSQ) were used to assess associated medical and psychosocial factors. Clearance was obtained from the institutional ethics committee before conducting the study.Results15% participants had a high SDQ score. Girls had more emotional problems, while the rest of the mental health problems were more prevalent in boys. Rural children were found to have more mental health issues. Having an eye problem, scoring <50% in last annual examinations, failure in examinations, difficulties in studying at home and difficulties in relationships were associated with high SDQ score. Keeping physically fit and having friends were associated with normal SDQ score. Logistic regression model revealed that age, receiving punishment in form of more homework and difficulty discussing friends with parents increased odds of high SDQ score, while having friends and after-school entertainment like watching movies decreased odds of high SDQ score.ConclusionsAt least one in eight adolescents in this study was at risk of mental health problems. SDQ self-report questionnaire and TSQ survey may be used as a screening modality to identify at-risk students.

Introduction: Bullying is intentional, repeated negative behavior by one or more persons directed against a person who can't defend him/herself. Over all prevalence of bullying in Indian schools in previous studies is 53%. Bullying is major problem in both adolescents and children. With advent of increased aggression and violence in schools studying bullying and its effects is necessary especially in the Indian context where there is paucity of literature. Aims and Objectives: The present study is an attempt to assess prevalence of bullying, identifying bullies and victims and to study the psycho-social profile of school going children involved in any form of bullying. Materials and Methods: The total sample comprised of 249 students studying in the 5th and 6 th class. They were administered the Peer Interaction in Primary School Questionnaire (PIPS), Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and details like weight, height and academic performance were also collected. Results: In the current study boys were more predominant in the bullies group. Verbal bullying (teasing and making fun) was more frequent compared to physical forms. Bully victim groups significantly had more emotional symptoms, peer problems and hyperactivity compared to other groups. Bully group had more conduct problems compared to other groups.

Background: Bullying in childhood and adolescence has pervasive negative impacts in adulthood in both victims and bullies. There are few studies describing the prevalence of bullying in Indian schools, and few which have documented the various forms of bullying prevalent in our country. This study is being carried out with working hypothesis that various forms of bullying perpetration and victimisation exists in Indian urban schools. Objectives: To study the prevalence of bullying perpetration/ victimization, forms of bullying/victimization in Indian high school students. Methods: A cross sectional study conducted in 2 urban schools in Bangalore. A cohort of 435 adolescents (13-18yrs) were administered a pre validated 8 item questionnaire, part of the Student School Survey to assess bullying perpetration/ victimization. Results: 435 students in all, with 242 girls (55.6%), 170 boys (39.1%), 23 not revealing gender were studied. Total prevalence of bullying perpetration was 70.74%, and victimization was 74.94%. Verbal bullying was the most prevalent (55.17%) with physical bullying (40.46%) and cyber bullying (15.86%) being less frequently reported. Similarly verbal victimization (65.75%) was most prevalent followed by physical victimization (40.23%) and cyber victimization (14.48%). Conclusions: The information revealed by our study sensitizes doctors to the existing prevalence of bullying. Paediatricians and adolescent physicians should enquire about bullying from their adolescent patients and offer anticipatory guidance. Assessment of bullying can be implemented routinely in schools. A multi-targeted approach at individual/family level, school level, community level, State level and National level to make the school a safer environment for children can be adopted.
