Profile characteristics of the MPI-DLV clusters of pain patients

Abstract: This article describes an investigation into whether there are differences among the four pain patient clusters from the Multidimensional Pain Inventory-Dutch Language Version (MPI-DLV) in terms of prescribed analgesic medication, level of intelligence, and other personality characteristics (MMPI). Dysfunctional patients were distinguished by a higher level of analgesic medication intake. Patients classified as Average were marked by a marginally significant higher level of intelligence. “…Studies have scrutinized this by examining if AC patients score differently on measures of social desirability and defensiveness compared to DYS and ID patients. 11,30 Their results suggest that AC patients do not engage in a favorable reporting bias. Furthermore, the distinctiveness of the two maladaptive coping clusters regarding psychological distress has remained inconclusive.…”

“…Moreover, a number of studies (21) have reported clinical results using a five-factor factorial structure, with versions of the MPI in different languages. Cluster profiling proposed by Rudy et al (22) is widely used (6,(23)(24)(25)(26)(27) and implements the five factors in section 1 to categorize individuals based on a biopsychosocial perspective. Because replicating these findings would be of interest, retaining a five-factor structure seems meaningful because it conforms with what is reported in the literature on the MPI.…”

“…A number of psychometric tests were performed before initial treatment. The Dutch version of the Multidimensional Pain Inventory (MPI‐DLV) was administered to register pain‐related psychosocial and behavioral aspects [30,31]. Cognitive dimensions were registered with the Pain Cognition List (PCL) [32].…”
