Background Pre-hospital and emergency services in Indonesia are still developing. Despite recent improvements in the Indonesian healthcare system, issues with the provision of pre-hospital and emergency services persist. The demand for pre-hospital and emergency services has not been the subject of previous research and, therefore, has not been fully understood. Our research explored the utilization of emergency medical services by patients attending hospital emergency departments in Jakarta, Indonesia. Methods The study used a cross-sectional survey design involving five general hospitals (four government-funded and one private). Each patient’s demographic profile, medical conditions, time to treatment, and mode of transport to reach the hospital were analysed using descriptive statistics. Results A total of 1964 (62%) patients were surveyed. The median age of patients was 44 years with an interquartile range (IQR) of 26 to 58 years. Life-threatening conditions such as trauma and cardiovascular disease were found in 8.6 and 6.6% of patients, respectively. The majority of patients with trauma travelled to the hospital using a motorcycle or car (59.8%). An ambulance was used by only 9.3% of all patients and 38% of patients reported that they were not aware of the availability of ambulances. Ambulance response time was longer as compared to other modes of transportation (median: 24 minutes and IQR: 12 to 54 minutes). The longest time to treatment was experienced by patients with neurological disease, with a median time of 120 minutes (IQR: 78 to 270 minutes). Patients who used ambulances incurred higher costs as compared to those patients who did not use ambulances. Conclusion The low utilization of emergency ambulances in Jakarta could be contributed to patients’ lack of awareness of medical symptoms and the existence of ambulance services, and patients’ disinclination to use ambulances due to high costs and long response times. The emergency ambulance services can be improved by increasing population awareness on symptoms that warrant the use of ambulances and reducing the cost burden related to ambulance use.

Nursing profession students need readiness to attend profession learning. Optimal readiness is directly proportional to optimal capabilities. The characteristics of emergency department tend to make nursing profession students the first and most frequent resource to deal with patients entering the emergency department. This study aims to determine the readiness of nursing profession students on handling emergency patients in emergency department.This study uses quantitative descriptive methods through approaches cross sectional. The population in this study was a nursing profession students of the Faculty of Nurisng, Universitas Padjadjaran as many as 66 respondents. The total sampling technique was used in this study. This research measuring instrument uses the READI-JV The results of the study were calculated using quantitative descriptive analysis using a cross-sectional approach.The results showed that as many as 51 (77.3%) nursing profession students are not ready to handle emergency patients. The percentage of readiness obtained in the leadership and administrative support dimensions was 85.2%, the readiness obtained in the operational competency dimension was 63.9%, the readiness obtained in the establishment dimension was 63.1%, the readiness obtained in the stress handling dimension was 57.6%, the readiness obtained in the dimensions of group integration and identification of 57.5%, readiness obtained in the survival skills dimension was 56.6%, and readiness obtained in the clinical competency dimension was 47.2%.The unpreparedness of nursing profession students is because most of the respondents have not attended emergency department training. So that it is necessary to optimize the learning methods during pre- profession by applying in accordance with emergencies and based on case studies as well as providing stress management to students to reduce stress levels in nursing profession students.

Tindakan bedah merupakan salah satu intervensi perawatan yang penting. Pusat kesehatan yang telah mengetahui tingkat kejadian kasus bedah spesifik dapat melakukan persiapan dengan lebih baik. Tujuan: Mendapatkan profil kasus rawat inap pasien di bangsal Bedah RSUD Scholoo Keyen Papua Barat, Indonesia, periode Januari–Desember 2021. Metode: Penelitian deskriptif retrospektif. Hasil: Selama periode tersebut didapatkan 206 pasien. Laki-laki sebanyak 60,68%, di mana 27,18% berusia 26-35 tahun, 70,39% merupakan kasus non-trauma, dan 93,69% menjalani tindakan operatif dengan sebagian besar lama perawatan 1-3 hari (71,84%). Tiga kasus terbanyak ialah apendisitis akut (18,45%), abses (14,08%), dan tumor jinak (13,11%). Simpulan: Pada studi ini, mayoritas pasien adalah laki-laki, usia 26-35 tahun, kasus non-trauma operatif terbanyak apendisitis akut dengan lama perawatan 1-3 hari. Surgery is an important care intervention. Health centers with data on the incidence of specific surgical cases can be better prepared. Objective: To obtain profiles of surgical cases from January to December 2021 at Scholoo Keyen General Hospital, West Papua, Indonesia. Method: A retrospective descriptive survey. Results: During the period, 206 patients were registered. Patients were predominantly male (60,68%), aged 26- 35 years (27,18%), non-traumatic cases (70,39%). Surgery was done in 93,69% of cases within 1-3 days of treatment (71,84%). Three major cases were: acute appendicitis (18,45%), abscess (14,08%), and benign tumor (13,11%). Conclusion: The majority of cases were males, aged 26-35 years, non-traumatic surgical cases with 1-3 day length of treatment; the most frequent case was acute appendicitis.
