Proficiencies of Artemisia scoparia against CCl4 induced DNA damages and renal toxicity in rat

Abstract: BackgroundArtemisia scoparia is traditionally used in the local system of medicine in kidney disorders. This study aimed at scrutinizing the nephroprotective prospective of A. scoparia methanol extract against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) provoked DNA damages and oxidative stress in kidneys of rat.MethodsDried aerial parts of A. scoparia were powdered and extracted with methanol to obtain the viscous material (ASM). Sprague Dawley male rats (42) were grouped (7) having 6 rats in each. Group I remained untreated… Show more

“…Such injuries might augment the hepatic injuries and functional anomalies. The results recorded in this study were in conformity to Sajid et al [61] where the comet length had increased while the %DNA in head was decreased with CCl 4 treatment to rats. However a restoration in these comet parameters was recorded with co-administration of methanol extract of Artemisia scoparia [61].…”

“…Free radicals can induce abnormal proteins, depletion of antioxidants, immune system and changes in gene expression [3]. The antioxidants such as polyphenolics can protect the biological systems against the harmful effects of oxidative processes [4]. Thus, increased consumption of plant derived products which are good sources of antioxidants is a convenient way to control the diseases induced with oxidative stress [5].…”

“…Although the polyphenols demonstrate hepatoprotection due to their antioxidant effect, there are other effects such as immunomodulatory and antiinflammatory 28 . Different in vivo studies on animals reported that carbon tetrachloride causes liver and kidney injuries 29,30 through generation of electrophilic trichloromethyl (CCl3) radicals 31 . Similar hepatoprotective effects of different seed extracts of red grape varieties were reported not only in the model of CCl4 induced liver damage in rats 32 , but also in the experiments that involed the poisoning of rats with ethanol 33,34 , acetaminophen-induced liver injury 35,36 , dimethylnitrosamine-induced liver damage in rats 35,36 , as well as on liver steatosis 37 and in γ-irradiated rat 38 .…”
