Background Discussions on ethics of care are needed to shape the identity of nurses and nursing. In light of the discourses surrounding nursing and altruism, nurses should initiate research on altruism and nursing. Aim The purpose of this literature review was to explore the meaning of altruism as a value in nursing. Review methods A hermeneutic approach, using a circular framework, was followed to search for literature, review and understand the text. Results The conceptualisation of altruism as a value in nursing care in this review strives to describe what altruism is; in what situations does it appear; for what purpose is it used; and how is it practiced. Conclusion Altruism enables nurses to tolerate difficult situations and motivates them to sacrifice themselves and do what is best for the patient, especially when patients are compromised in their ability to care for themselves.

Cinsiyet; bireyin kadın veya erkek kavramıyla ortaya koyduğu genetik, fizyolojik ve biyolojik özellikleridir. Toplumsal cinsiyet ise biyolojik farklılıkların dışında, toplumun kadın ve erkeğe yönelik bakış açısı ile ilgilidir. 1,2 Bu kavramın içinde barındırdığı diğer bir kavram da cinsiyet rolleridir. Toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri, toplumun kadın ve erkeğe ilişkin kabul edilen rollerini ifade etmektedir. 3,4 Kadınlar ve erkekler, doğdukları günden itibaren yetiştirilmeleri esnasında toplumsal cinsiyete dayalı rollerini öğrenmektedir. 5 Toplumdaki cinsiyet rollerine bakıldığında; kadının daha çok ev içinde olup, iş hayatında pasif olması gibi eşitlikçi olmayan rolleri; erkeğin ise daha çok ev dışı alanda aktif olduğu, evin reisi olma ORİJİNAL ARAŞTIRMA ÖZET Amaç: Hemşirelik öğrencilerinin toplumsal cinsiyet rollerine yönelik tutumları ile bakım davranışları arasındaki ilişkinin değerlendirilmesidir. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Tanımlayıcı türdeki araştırmanın örneklemini 298 hemşirelik öğrencisi oluşturmuştur. Veriler, "Kişisel Bilgi Formu", "Toplumsal Cinsiyet Rolleri Tutum Ölçeği (TCRTÖ)" ve "Bakım Değerlendirme Ölçeği (BDÖ)" ile toplanmıştır. Bulgular: Kız öğrencilerin yaş ortalamasının 20,6±1,6 yıl, erkek öğrencilerin yaş ortalamasının 21,1±2 yıl olduğu; %66,8'inin kız, %33,2'sinin erkek olduğu, öğrencilerin %52,4'ünün mesleği iş bulma garantisi nedeni ile seçtiği, %69,5'inin ise bölüme isteyerek geldiği belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin TCRTÖ puan ortalaması 107,8±12,8, BDÖ puan ortalaması 5,2±0,8 olarak saptanmıştır. TCRTÖ'nin; "Eşitlikçi cinsiyet rolü" alt boyutu ile BDÖ toplam puan ortalaması arasında pozitif yönde ve düşük düzeyde, evlilikte cinsiyet ve geleneksel cinsiyet rolü alt boyut puan ortalamaları ile BDÖ toplam puan ortalaması arasında negatif yönde düşük düzeyde anlamlı ilişki saptanmıştır. Sonuç: Öğrencilerin toplumsal cinsiyet rollerine yönelik tutumlarının eşitlikçi yönde, bakım davranışları algılamalarının ise iyi düzeyde olduğu, bakım davranışları ile evlilikte cinsiyet ve geleneksel cinsiyet rollerine yönelik tutumları arasında negatif yönde, eşitlikçi cinsiyet rolü ile pozitif yönde ilişki olduğu belirlenmiştir. Background: Professional socialization of nurses defines a process in which novice practitioners are trained to develop the attitude and skills to become professional practitioners. This study was conducted to assess the level of professional socialization among clinical nurses. Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. A total of 600 nurses from Tehran and Shahrekord teaching hospitals and Oil Company hospital in Abadan, were recruited through convenience sampling method, participated in this study. Data collection was based on a valid and reliable questionnaire consisting of two parts including demographic form and "Nurses' Professional Socialization" (NPS). Sta tistical analysis was carried out by Kruskal-Wallis test and chi-square tests using SPSS software, version 17 and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean score of nurses' professional socialization level was 213.96 ± 20.89. Nurses were at competent, proficient and expert levels with no novice or advanced beginner nurses. In professional socialization domains, there was a significant difference in professional autonomy, commitment and group participation among Tehran, Shahrekord and Abadan (p=0.001). There was a significant relationships between work experiences and group participation domain (χ 2 = 9.1, df = 2, P = 0.01) and also the total score of professional socialization (χ 2 = 6.8, df = 2, P = 0.03). Conclusion: Nurses in this study were highly and professionally socialized. It is important for hospital nursing managers to maintain and promote levels of professional socialization and help the new comers' resocialization process after their educational period.

Abstract: Further research is needed in the development and testing of professional nursing values theory, and the reassessment of values instruments. Core professional values that are articulated may help unify the profession and demonstrate the value of nursing to the public.
