Professional and traditional collaboration in the mediation of family conflicts: The case of ethiopian immigrants in Israel

Abstract: This article describes an innovative mediation model, used among Ethiopian immigrant couples in Israel, which utilizes centuries‐old practices. The process, which employs indigenous lay leaders, called shmaglotz, is intended to enhance conventional interventions by human services professionals. The model practiced by the shmaglotz differs in key dimensions from conventional mediation.
