Products Formed from Analogues of 1,1,1-Trichloro-2,2-Bis( p -Chlorophenyl) Ethane (DDT) Metabolites by Pseudomonas putida

Abstract: Cultures of Pseudomonas putida growing in solutions with diphenylmethane as sole carbon source formed 1,1,1′,1′-tetraphenyldimethyl ether. The product was identified by gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. The formation of benzophenone, benzhydrol, and phenylglycolic acid was established by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Similar techniques also revealed that phenylacetic acid was a major metabolite. Resting cell susp… Show more

“…These observations suggest that the oxidation involves the conversion of DPM to BH to BP, a sequence involving the oxidation of -CH2to -CHOHto -C(O). Moreover, we have previously shown that BH and BP are formed from DPM by P. putida (18). These bacteria also cometabolized DDM, DBH, and DDA but not DBP, these being products formed in the microbial metabolism of DDT.…”

“…The cultures were grown in 2-liter Erlenmeyer flasks for 2 days at 30°C on a rotary shaker operating at 180 rpm. The procedures for preparation of resting cells used in manometric studies and for measurement of 02 uptake were reported previously (18). The respirometer flasks contained 17.0, 9.0, 12.6, 7.7, 10.8, and 14.0 mg of cells of P. putida; Pseudomonas sp.…”
