Location of study siteThe study was conducted at the farm of Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute, Avikanagar. This area is located in a semi-arid region of sub-tropical India at longitude 75°-28°E, latitude 26°-26°N, and at altitude of 320 meter above mean sea level. The maximum and minimum ambient temperature ranges from 25.0 to 46.0°C, 17.0 to 37.0°C, respectively and mean relative humidity ranges from 15 to 90%. Adult Garole rams were transported with a flock of ewes from their natural habitat in West Bengal to the Institute farm in Rajasthan. Experimental animalsSix healthy adult Garole rams were used as semen donors. The AI with Garole ram semen was done in Malpura and Avikalin ewes. Malpura is a triple purpose hardy sheep, which has originated from the arid and semiarid tracts of western tropical India.

“…The flock with a single distribution for ovulation potential will be referred to as the' + +' flock and the other as 'mixed + +' and 'F + ' . The distributions of ovulation potential classes for the demonstration simulations were derived from ovulation data from 'typical' Western Australian flocks as described by Knight et al (1975), Marshall et al (1976) and Booroola mixtures by Beetson (1980) as described above under 'Ovulation'. All other parameters were common to both simulated flocks and were also based on observations from typical flocks.…”

Sheep reproduction from ovulation to weaning was modelled as a Markov series of multiple binomial distributions, which required a minimum of assumptions and a small number of parameters for the entire reproductive process. Methods of constructing the model and of estimating the parameters are described, and results from simulated example flocks with different ovulatory potentials are presented. A variety of potential applications, for example as an adjunct to economic modelling and methods of validation and use in the analysis of reproductive experiments, are discussed.
