This paper analyzes total factor productivity growth in agriculture in Latin America and the Caribbean between 1961 and 2007 employing the Malmquist Index, a non-parametric methodology that uses data envelopment analysis (DEA) methods. The results show that among developing regions, Latin America and the Caribbean shows the highest agricultural productivity growth. The highest growth within the region has occurred in the last two decades, especially due to improvements in efficiency and the introduction of new technologies. Within the region, land-abundant countries consistently outperform land-constrained countries. Within agriculture, crops and non-ruminant sectors have displayed the strongest growth between 1961 and 2001, and ruminant production performed the worst. Additional analysis of the cases of Brazil and Cuba illustrates potential effects of policies and external shocks on agricultural productivity; policies that do not discriminate against agricultural sectors and that remove price and production distortions may help improve productivity growth. O aparecimento do Brasil como um importante produtor agrícola mundialé muitas vezes creditado a expansão da produção para solos da savana brasileira ouCerrado. Estes solos são, no entanto, deficientes em nutrientes importantes e propensosà degradação, necessitando de processos insumo-intensivos que sugerem um baixonível de eficiência produtiva. Empregando uma seqüência de Censos agrícolas e umaabordagem de bioma para a caracterização de zonas agrícolas, o presente estudo avaliao crescimento da produtividade total de fatores do Cerrado e do seu potencial produtivo.A análise destaca o custo em termos de recursos do “Milagre do Cerrado” no Brasil,o papel da infra-estrutura rodoviária pavimentada em expandir as oportunidades deprodução e os ganhos de produtividade significativos que o Cerrado ainda pode alcançar.Os resultados sugerem uma diferença substancial de produtividade entre os produtoresmais eficientes e a média do Cerrado, o que implica que a produção pode ser fortementeaumentada se os produtores médios adotarem com sucesso as tecnologias e práticasde gestão dos produtores mais eficientes. De modo geral, e na medida que modelo doCerrado seja generalizável em outros locais, o desenvolvimento agrícola de savanasdo mundo, tais como as regiões sub-saharianas da Guiné africana, em “celeiros” vaiser caro em termos de insumos tais como fertilizantes e pesticidas, o que torna o seusucesso, portanto, dependente dos preços reais desses insumos.

Mudanças no uso e manejo da terra podem ser responsáveis por incrementos na produtividade agrícola. Neste artigo propõe-se o uso de modelos de Análise de Envoltória de Dados (DEA) para avaliar a distribuição espacial da eficiência de agricultores familiares na forma do uso da terra. Estudou-se a evolução da "produtividade da terra" para um grupo de agricultores de Machadinho d'Oeste (RO), para quatro períodos de tempo. As variáveis dos modelos DEA foram as produções de arroz, milho e café como outputs, e a área total plantada dessas culturas como input. Os resultados mostram que o plantio simultâneo de arroz e milho foi a combinação de melhor desempenho. Houve dependência espacial para a eficiência produtiva nos quatro anos avaliados. Os anos de 1999 e 2002 apresentaram maior uniformização em termos da eficiência produtiva dos lotes por toda área, com os lotes mais eficientes concentrando-se na parte central da área de estudo.
