Productivity factors of the Finnish semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifer t.tarandus) stock during the 1990s

Abstract: Intensive reindeer grazing and the increase of other land use forms have caused a decline in the amount of arboreal (Alectoria, Bryoria spp.) and reindeer (Cladina spp.) lichens in the Finnish reindeer management area during the last few decades. Supplementary feeding of reindeer has increasingly compensated for the lack of natural winter fodder. The amount of the supplementary feeding and the quantity and quality of summer pastures should therefore have an increasing effect on the productivity of reindeer sto… Show more

“…Pasture quality is generally seen as an important factor for ariation in herd productiity and thus population density (Klein, 1968;1982;1991;Reimers, 1983;Skogland, 1983;Post & Klein, 1999;Kumpula et al, 2002). Moreoer, pasture quality is affected by reindeer grazing as well as e.g.…”

“…Monitoring changes in egetation oer such areas would be difficult, time-consuming and expensie. he amount and nutritional quality of aailable food during the snow-free season (summer and autumn) strongly affect the calf growth and the energy inested in body reseres (fat and muscles) of all categories of reindeer (Klein, 1964;1968;1991;Reimers, 1983;Reimers et al, 1983;Kumpula et al, 2002). hus, change in the aerage body condition (muscle and fat reseres) of the herd could be a useful indicator of change in the grazing resource during this period.…”

“…Within the last several decades, the increasing numbers of reindeer has clearly exceeded carrying capacity in parts of Norway and Finland Kumpula et al, 2002;Moen & Danell, 2003). In attempts to offset this feed shortage, increased supplementary feeding is being practiced .…”

“…Fluctuating population numbers are also common in wild Rangifer populations, with changes in food availability generally being seen as the main driver (Skogland, 1983;Post & Klein, 1999;Kumpula et al, 2002). The body condition, and thus the survival and reproduction of the animals, depends on pasture quality in a wide sense, including its accessibility, abundance, and the nutritive quality of vegetation at different times of the year (Fancy, 1986;Langvatn et al, 1996;Tveraa et al, 2007;Lundqvist et al, 2009;Roturier & Roué, 2009).…”
