Productivity and Resource Use Efficiency of Tiger Shrimp Farming in Some Selected Areas of Bagerhat District in Bangladesh

Abstract: The study has been applied for measuring productivity, profitability and efficiency of shrimp (Penaeusmonodon) farming in Bangladesh. It was found that per hectare gross return (GR), net return and gross margin were Tk. 364,222, Tk. 215,931 and Tk. 260,095, respectively, and Benefit Cost Ratio was 2.46 for shrimp farming. All the explanatory variables had a positive and significant effect, except for cost of lime had a negative and insignificant effect on the GR of shrimp farming. Efficiency analysis indicated… Show more

“…Crustacean culture, in general, is most profitable in terms of high commercial value [73]. Shrimp farming is known for high yield potentiality and providing higher returns to farmers [209]. Moreover, consumers often prefer organic shrimp products, which remains highly profitable [210,211] economic status of stakeholders and environmental benefits [212,213].…”

“…Rasha et al [ 26 ] studied the productivity and resource use efficiency of tiger shrimp revealing that production function for shrimp farming exhibited increasing returns to scale. The major constraints faced by the farmers were high price of inputs (55.20%) followed by insufficient water in dry season (40%) and others.…”

“…Consequently, the shrimp sector has become an important income-generating opportunity for coastal communities of Bangladesh, with the industry contributing US $383 million through export earnings (75.8% of the total fish and fish product exported in the financial year 2018–19), and subsequently playing a substantial role in the national economy (DoF 2019 a). In the southwestern part of Bangladesh (Bagerhat, Khulna and Satkhira districts within the Khulna division), shrimp farming has been adopted by thousands of farmers, as it has a better benefit–cost ratio (BCR; 2.46; Rasha et al 2019 ) compared to finfish (1.16; Khan et al 2021 ). Typically, these farms are family-run, small enterprises with produce being used for family nutrition with income generated through farm gate or marker produce sales.…”
