PurposeThe present study aimed to investigate the relationship between career development and productivity of the university staff with the mediating role of self-regulation.Design/methodology/approachThe research approach is quantitative-relational and is based on structural equation modeling (SEM). The population consisted of the staff of two Iranian universities in 2018 out of which 331 participants were selected using Cochran's formula and a proportionate stratified random sampling method. To gather data, the self-regulation questionnaire (SRQ), the career development questionnaire (CDQ) and a researcher-made employees' productivity questionnaire (EPQ) were used. In terms of reliability, Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the instruments was found to be 0.97, 0.84 and 0.88, respectively. Face and content validity were confirmed by a group of field experts.FindingsThe findings indicated that the staff’s self-regulation had a positive and significant effect on individual, organizational and environmental productivity factors. In addition, self-regulation had the ability to predict those factors. It was found that self-regulation had a mediating role in the relationship between career development and staff productivity. According to the results, educational institutions, especially universities, can provide their staff with the opportunity to exploit their full potentials through reinforcing their self-regulation and increasing their productivity.Research limitations/implicationsHigher self-regulation capacity among university staff helps them liberate their potential energy for disinterested selfless service to the society. Higher self-regulation capacities allow individuals to increase the energy resource for self-regulation and contribute to the productivity and quality of life. The statistical population of the quantitative section is confined only to the staff working at Iranian universities. Therefore, our results should be cautiously generalized to universities in other countries.Practical implicationsOur findings can help in empowering human resources and consequently improving education and research processes.Social implicationsUniversities play a decisive role in the economic growth and development of countries because of their diverse services in the production and distribution of science and knowledge.Originality/valueThis study was conducted on university’s staff productivity, while most previous researches have been conducted in industrial enterprises. Thus, the present study seeks to fill this research gap by means of providing new perspectives and information on the factors affecting staff productivity and the relationship between research variables in higher education institutions.

Purpose Construction industry (CI) has great prominence for the world economy, and it is expected that, with the use of the innovative technologies and approaches of Industry 4.0 (I4.0), the new industrial paradigm, construction can reach higher levels of productivity. This study aims to develop a model (readiness model) to assess the level of use of I4.0 technologies by the construction sector in Brazil and its most relevant applications. Design/methodology/approach The methodology used was bibliographic research, design-science research and a survey to validate the model, carried out with 162 companies, considered among the main ones in the sector in Brazil. The literature review revealed 13 technologies of I4.0 applied to construction; hence, the views of industry experts were based on these technologies. Findings The Digital Advancement Within CoNstruction (DAWN) readiness model was proposed, showing that among the 13 evaluated technologies of I4.0 and their applications, the Brazilian construction companies had a low level of utilization; both high and middle-income companies presented this low level of use; some technologies with a greater number of scientific publications were less used in practice in the Brazilian construction. Originality/value The originality and theoretical contribution are to present a readiness model to assess the level of use of I4.0 technologies and their most relevant applications in the CI in countries with an economy similar to Brazil’s, making it possible to measure the level of adoption of these technologies.

O setor da construção civil é fundamental para a economia brasileira, mesmo em períodos de crise, dada sua significativa contribuição para o Produto Interno Bruto e o estímulo ao crescimento de setores correlatos. No entanto, a deterioração precoce de edifícios, frequentemente resultante de falhas construtivas ou problemas patológicos, desafia a qualidade e durabilidade das construções. Este estudo busca quantificar o impacto das manifestações patológicas nos orçamentos de reparo de três edificações públicas em Juazeiro do Norte/CE – UBS Vila Três Marias, UBS Socorro e UBS Betolândia –, destacando as consequências financeiras de obras interrompidas. A metodologia inclui coleta de dados por vistorias técnicas e documentação fotográfica, classificação das manifestações patológicas, recomendação de medidas corretivas e análise de custos para quantificar o impacto financeiro das deteriorações. Os resultados revelam que projetos paralisados não apenas atrasam a entrega de infraestruturas essenciais, mas também acarretam custos adicionais, indicando lacunas na gestão de projetos e previsão de contingências. A UBS Vila Três Marias foi a mais afetada, sugerindo problemas graves ou lacunas na construção inicial. Infiltrações e deformações excessivas foram as principais causas de custos adicionais, ressaltando a importância de planejamento e orçamentação cuidadosos na infraestrutura pública para evitar custos elevados de reparo.
