Production rate of hard thermal photons and screening of quark mass singularity

Abstract: Abstract. The emission of hard real photons from a quark-gluon plasma at high temperatures is studied. At lowest order the QCD processes for quark-antiquark annihilation (qq--*79) and for Compton scattering (qg~Tq) lead to logarithmically divergent thermal production rates for massless quarks. By applying recently developed resummation methods of finite temperature perturbation theory we show that effects due to Landau damping on the exchanged quark provide finite rates. Comparisons with previous estimates and… Show more

“…In the particular case of the photon production rate, it is the Landau damping of a soft fermion which provides infrared finiteness [197,198] (in the bare perturbation theory, there is a logarithmic divergence associated with the exchange of a massless quark). Another example where the resummation enters in a decisive way is the calculation of the production rate of soft dileptons in a hot quarkgluon plasma [202].…”

“…The photon emission rate from a quark-gluon plasma has been perturbatively estimated by various groups [71,72,73] to leading order in the electromagnetic and strong coupling constants. However, there are complications due to leading logs that arise from multiple scattering of co-linear bremsstrahlung (Landau-PomeranchukMigdal (LPM) effect).…”
