Production of triterpenoid compounds fromGanoderma lucidumspore powder using ultrasound-assisted extraction

Abstract: When ingested as a dietary supplement, Ganoderma lucidum spore powders (GLSP) provide various health benefits such as enhanced immunity, liver protection and anticancer effects. In this study, triterpenoid extraction from GLSP was achieved using an ultrasound-assisted process which was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was also compared to the most conventional chemical extraction method. For UAE, optimum extraction conditions were found to be ethanol conc… Show more

“…Ganoderma lucidum (GL), a functional medicine and food, is one of the most highly regarded traditional Chinese medicines due to its ability to strengthen human health [20]. Modern pharmacological and clinical investigations have demonstrated that GL has multifarious pharmacological properties, such as antibacterial [21], antioxidant [22], and anti-inflammatory effects in different in vivo models [23,24] in addition to its hepatoprotective and antitumor properties [25]. Indeed, GL possesses a wide variety of bioactive molecules like terpenoids, phenolic compounds, and polysaccharides, which have attracted attention in recent years due to their extensive antioxidation and anti-inflammation [22,26,27].…”

“…According to the theory of similarity and phase solubility, the release of components from the cells is facilitated when the polarities of the solute and solvent are similar. 15 , 33 Extraction time affects the surface contact between the solute and solvent. As shown in Figure 1D , increasing the ultrasound time from 10 min to 30 min resulted in a significant increase in yield, which was attributed to the prolonged contact time between the solute and solvent that facilitated the diffusion of the target compound.…”

“…It was also observed that a slight decrease in the yield of the marker compounds occurred after the solvent-to-material ratio went above 80:1 mL/g. When the solvent-to-material ratio increased beyond a certain amount, the yield of the bioactive compounds decreased due to the attenuation of the ultrasonic waves; that is, the active portion was restricted to a zone located near the ultrasound probe, while other dissolved compounds increased in the leaf samples, thus hindering the dissolution of the marker compounds [ 38 , 39 ]. At the same time, the prolonged exposure of the extracted phenolic and flavonoid compounds to sonication might have caused degradation and structural destruction due to the generation of free radicals by the ultrasound waves and other components, which were extracted, then reacted or polymerized with the target compounds [ 38 , 40 , 41 ].…”
