Production of thermozymocidin (myriocin) by the pyrenomycete Melanconis flavovirens

Abstract: Submerged culture of the pyrenomycete Melanconis flavovirens produces a strongly active antifungal antibiotic. The antibiotic was isolated from the culture mash. In purified compound the physico-chemical characteristics, including 1H NMR spectrum, were estimated. The antibiotic was found to be identical with thermozymocidin (myriocin) as confirmed by comparison with synthetically prepared thermozymocidin.

“…26). This α-amino fatty acid derived product is isolated from several genera of fungi, mostly by Myriococcum , 316 Melanconis 317 and Isaria . 318 It inhibits sphingosine biosynthesis by blocking the activity of serine palmitoyltransferase, which is a potent immunosuppressant with 10- to 100-fold more activity than that of immunosuppressant 94 .…”
