Production of the green lacewing Chrysoperla caranea (Steph.) (Neuropt., Chrysopidae) reared on semi-artificial diet based on the algae, Chlorella vulgaris

Abstract: The larvae of the aphid lion Chrysoperla carnea (Steph.) were reared on a semi-arti®cial diet for laboratory rearing. Algae, Chlorella vulgaris Beij was used as a source of protein for the nutrition of the predator. Feeding the newly hatched larvae of the predator on water extract of the algae by using a small piece of sponge, extended the larval duration up to 30 days, and the larvae failed to pupate. The addition of carbohydrates, salts and vitamins was necessary to the larvae to complete their development t… Show more

“…We purchased powdered Chlorella vulgaris Beijerink microalgae from ZNatural Foods, LLC (West Palm Beach, FL, USA). It is an emerald green, single‐celled freshwater microalgae recognized for its high protein content and as a nutritional supplement in the diet of humans, livestock, fish, and invertebrates (Lee et al ., ; Maruyama et al ., ; Zaki & Gesraha, ; Becker, ). We combined nine parts of synthetic pollen to one part of C. vulgaris powder to formulate our synthetic pollen‐ Chlorella alga mixture, SPCA.…”

“…It has been recorded as an effective generalist predator of aphids, coccids, mites, and mealybugs, etc. (Singh and Manoj, 2000;Zaki and Gesraha, 2001). It has been widely used for aphid bio-control and other insect pests because of its ubiquitous nature, polyphagous habits, and compatibility with selected chemical insecticides, microbial agents, and amenability to mass rearing (Uddin et al, 2005).…”
