Production of superoxide anion radicals as evidence for carbon nanodots acting as electron donors by the chemiluminescence method

Abstract: In this communication, a novel chemiluminescence phenomenon was observed for the as-prepared carbon nanodots (CDs) in a concentrated sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution. The generation of superoxide anion radical (O2˙(-)) directly provides evidence for the excellent electron-donating ability of CDs.

“…Besides, the study of mechanisms of CL in aqueous system has made great progress in recent years [151], such as expounding the mechanisms of quantum-dot (QDs)-enhanced CL [4]. However, the mechanisms of the luminescence of analytes in CTL are still not fully understood and comprehensive insight is clearly necessary.…”

“…Thus, various chemiluminescence (CL) systems have received considerable attention in the past years. To further improve the sensitivity of CL assays, various catalysts have been investigated, including metal nanoclusters [1], metallic nanoparticles (in particular noble metal nanoparticles) [5,6], metal oxide nanoparticles [7,8], carbon dots [9][10][11], layered double hydroxide (LDH) [4,12], quantum dots [13,14], and LDH-quantum dot nanocomposites [15].…”
