Production of succinic acid from oil palm empty fruit bunch cellulose using Actinobacillus succinogenes

Abstract: Abstract. Succinic acid is a common metabolite in plants, animals and microorganisms. It has been used widely in agricultural, food and pharmaceutical industries. Enzymatic hydrolysate glucose from oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) cellulose was used as a substrate for succinic acid production using Actinobacillus succinogenes. Using cellulose extraction from OPEFB can enhance the production of glucose as a main substrate for succinic acid production. The highest concentration of glucose produced from enzymat… Show more

“…Crude glucose was obtained from enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose extracted from autohydrolysis delignified oil palm empty fruit bunches using a cocktail enzyme comprised of equal amount of Celluclast 1.5 L and Novozyme 188 as suggested by Pasma et al [36]. The crude glucose was further concentrated in a vacuum evaporator at 50 °C for 30 minutes to obtain glucose concentration of 172 g/L.…”

“…The Box-Behnken Design (BBD) and Central Composite Design (CCD) are the most common and suitable for the process optimisation [93][94][95][96][97][98]. However, BBD is more well known than CCD for the ability to predict and determine the optimal condition in the least number of experiments [99][100][101][102][103][104]. On the other hand, CCD also has the same function as BBD, but the latter demands more experiments as it studies the axial points of the parameters.…”

“…A. succinogenes is recognized as one of the most promising microorganisms for industrial SA production due to its great metabolic capability and tolerance to high concentrations of organic acids (Carvalho et al 2016;Jiang et al 2017). However, little is known on the production of SA from oil palm biomasses (Pasma et al 2013;Akhtar and Idris 2017;Luthfi et al 2016Luthfi et al , 2017Tan et al 2016Tan et al , 2018. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no study yet has elucidated the potential use of OPTB in SA production.…”
