Production of rohitukine in leaves and seeds ofDysoxylum binectariferum: An alternate renewable resource

Abstract: Its purity was ascertained using HR-MS and NMR. Crude extracts were prepared from different tissues of D. binectariferum. Rohitukine content in all the tissues was quantified by HPLC.Results: Rohitukine accumulates in a significant amount in seeds, trunk bark, leaves, twigs, and fruits of D. binectariferum. Seeds have the highest rohitukine content (2.42%, dry weight) followed by trunk bark (1.34%, dry weight), leaves (1.064%, dry weight), twigs (0.844% dry weight), and fruits (0.4559% dry weight). “…Rohitukine, a chromone alkaloid is a natural product only found in four plant species, Amoora rohituka, Dysoxylum binectariferum, Schumanniophyton magnificum and Schumanniophyton problematicum [69]. This compound is known for its multiple properties including anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and immuno-modulatory.…”

“…Cladosporin (68) isolated from the endophytic fungus Cladosporium cladosporioides was also reported for its anti-inflammatory activities [93]. Phomol (69), an antimicrobial agent isolated from Phomopsis species endophyte of Erythrina crista-galli, also demonstrated an interesting anti-inflammatory activity in the mouse ear assay [94]. From another endophytic fungus Phomopsis sp.…”

“…The leaves of D. binectariferum contain 1.06% rohitukine, 16 a content which is comparable to the barks (1.34%). Thus, our initial investigations were started with the isolation of rohitukine from leaves using chromatographic techniques.…”

“…14 In recent years, significant efforts have been made to understand the spatial distribution of rohitukine in various parts of D. binectariferum. 15,16 Furthermore, bioanalytical methods and pharmacokinetic analysis of rohitukine has also been studied recently. 17,18 The chemical structures of 1-3 are shown in Figure 1.…”
