Production of quantum-degenerate mixtures of ytterbium and lithium with controllable interspecies overlap

Abstract: Quantum-degenerate mixtures of one-electron and two-electron atoms form the starting point for studying few-and many-body physics of mass-imbalanced pairs as well as the production of paramagnetic polar molecules. We recently reported the achievement of dual-species quantum degeneracy of a mixture of lithium and ytterbium atoms. Here we present details of the key experimental steps for the all-optical preparation of these mixtures. Further, we demonstrate the use of the magnetic field gradient tool to compensa… Show more

“…The resulting trap frequencies are (ω x , ω y , ω z ) = 2π × (17, 110, 10) Hz. Following this method we can reliably create pure 174 Yb condensates of 1.2 × 10 6 atoms, a factor of 4 improvement over the largest reported Yb BEC number [24], with a total cycle time of 15 s.…”

“…We perform our experiment in the apparatus described in [24] using 174 Yb bosons. Our laser cooling procedure can produce 10 8 atoms in 5 s at 30 µK in a compressed magneto-optical trap (MOT) operating on the 1 S 0 → 3 P 1 transition.…”

“…The preparation of the dual superfluid involves significant extensions to our earlier cooling methods for the dual-species Yb-Li system [17] (see supplemental material [18]). Briefly, we load laser-cooled atoms into a crossed-beam 1064 nm optical dipole trap (ODT) optimized for efficient evaporative cooling by dynamically changing the trap shape [19].…”

“…For the Cs+Yb system a dual magneto-optical trap was created [28] and, more recently, the interspecies thermalization properties of the mixture in an optical trap [29] were investigated. The cotrapping of Li+Yb mixtures was studied by Hara et al [30] and Hansen et al [31]. Interestingly, magnetic Feshbach resonances in collisions of electronically excited Yb( 3 P 2 ) and Li were reported.…”
